The Role of the Public House in an Urban Environment

A study which examines the importance of public house visiting as a major leisure time activity, the pub as the centre of a community, and the customs and attitudes associated with the pub within an area of Leeds. Fieldwork involved informal conversation in ten chosen pubs, tape-recorded interviews in the homes of informants and the use of a questionnaire. The study comprises four main sections: an Introduction; consideration of the media and its influence via advertising on perceptions of the pub and its role; an introduction to the geographical area of study and description of interview methods; results, containing eleven sections: the city-bred drinking public of the area, topics of conversation, transcripts of two tape recordings made in November and December 1978, pub games, other pub based activities, students, immigrants, men and women, the death of a pub, food and drink, pub traders.
