Some Aspects of the Oral Folk-Lore of Macclesfield and its District

Description

A collection of 212 items of folklore, presented in two sections. The first records primary school children's games and rhymes, mostly drawn from the author's memory and representative of the years 1950 to 1957 in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Other examples and versions were collected in 1967. The second section contains traditional tales, gathered from printed sources, through responses to a questionnaire compiled by the collector, correspondence and interviews. The children's folklore section comprises 15 sub-sections, and includes descriptions of games (with the texts of associated rhymes), texts and tune transcription for singing games, other rhymes (and associated customs), examples of insults and epithets, impropriety and parody. The traditional tales section is divided into eight sub-sections: Historical Traditions, Witches, Ghosts and Spectres, Graves and Death, Beliefs, Giants, Tales of Magic and Humorous Tales. Appendices include notes on Cheshire customs (calendar, occupational, occasional) collected during fieldwork, an Index of Tale Motifs and an Index of First Lines.
