The Phonology of the Dialect of Wedmore, Somerset

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in the Somerset village of Wedmore, based on data collected through free-conversation fieldwork interviews with six local informants. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by four chapters which represent the sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[75] and the development of Middle English phonemes, and present tabular summaries of the development of Old English, Old French and Scandinavian vowels, and the Old English, Old French and Scandinavian equivalents of the modern vowel phonemes. An Index contains the words collected during the survey and used in the study.
