Children's Playground Games

Description

A descriptive account of children's games collected in April 1970 from children attending Elm Grove School in Worthing, and St. Nicolas Church of England School in Old Shoreham, West Sussex. The study includes a description of the geographical area, the schools' playgrounds and the fieldwork methodology employed. The latter involved the children completing a written questionnaire, and the photographing and tape recording of children at play. Nine chapters provide an explanation of the subject classification system chosen by the collector, the structure of the children's games, age group distinctions in the games and the transmission of games over time, followed by descriptions of games requiring/not requiring equipment, dramatic games, musical games and verbal lore (dips, pax-words, rhymes). An appendix includes examples of songs collected from children at Elm Grove School, a sample questionnaire and nineteen tune transcriptions. Photographs and diagrams are included in the main body of the study. Although reference is made to the tape recording of items, no tape was submitted with the study.
