The Folk Lore of Wild Flowers in the Parish of Leckhampton, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Collected in the Summer of 1970

Description

A presentation of folklore associated with wild flowers, based on information gathered from people living in Leckhampton in Gloucestershire. Interviews were conducted with schoolchildren, middle-aged and older residents. The study comprises ten main sections. These contain sayings, rhymes and beliefs concerning flowers and the weather (flowers as indicators of approaching seasons and as gardening guides, and the reading of the behaviour of flowers and trees to predict the weather), cookery (including recipes), legends of origin, divination, fairies, medicine (including cures), superstitions and games. A glossary of local names is included. The first of two appendices contains extracts from a number of printed sources, by way of comparison with the folklore items gathered by the collector. An Ordnance Survey map for Cheltenham is included, and the second appendix comprises two books: 'The Observer's Book of Grasses, Sedges and Rushes', revised by Francis Rose (London: Frederick Warne, 1966), and 'The Observer's Book of Wild Flowers', compiled by W. J. Stokoe (London: Frederick Warne, 1969). A personal folklore dossier compiled by Penelope Hammond as a coursework exercise is held at LAVC/SRP/3/2/002.
