Cockle Fishing at Leigh-on-Sea

Description

A dissertation on the cockle fishing industry of Leigh-on-Sea. The study comprises sections presenting a historical outline of the town and growth of the industry, the rise of the industry since 1840, the Leigh fisherman (with sections on clothing and boats), a description of the fishing grounds and the gathering of cockles, the journey home, unloading, cooking and marketing the cockles, occupational folklore and a glossary of terms. Notes on the common cockle are provided, with also maps of the Kent and Essex fisheries district. Photographs, newspaper cuttings and pencil drawings are included throughout.
