Folk Medicine

Description

A collection of traditional remedies gathered in a survey of five people living in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. The remedies are arranged in four chapters, the first concerning prevention (use of onions, camphor, amber, avoidance of using the forefinger to apply ointment, biting babies' fingernails). The second chapter contains sections on skin troubles (warts, boils, cuts and bruises, ringworm, burns and scalds, stings, chilblains, corns). The third chapter presents remedies collected for respiratory and throat complaints, and the final chapter brings together a number of miscellaneous cures (including those for colds, earache, hiccoughs, indigestion, nose bleeding, rheumatism and toothache).
