The Phonology of the Dialect of North Shields

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in the town of North Shields, Tyne and Wear, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with one informant. An introduction to the town and the informant, including three photocopied black and white prints showing the town, the River Tyne and the informant's childhood home, is followed by five chapters which record the sounds of the modern day speech of North Shields, the development of Middle English stressed and unstressed vowels, and consonants, in the dialect, and a tabular summary of the origins of stressed vowels in the dialect. An Index contains a list of words on which the study is based.
