The Life and Legends of Saint Brannoc: A Study in the Traditions of an Obscure Celtic Saint
Description
A study of the legends and traditions of Saint Brannoc of Braunton in Devon. This Saint is now equated by scholars with Saint Brynach of Nevern, and the first chapter of the study discusses the structure and motifs of the twelfth century 'Life' of this Saint, and compares them with the folk tale. Further chapters examine Saint Brannoc's association with Braunton, through reference to documentary evidence and consideration of local traditions; church dedications and the Cult of Relics; the life of Saint Brynach compared to the Lives of other Celtic saints; the iconology of Saint Brannoc of Braunton; and a sketch of the growth of the monastic movement in the Celtic church during the fifth and sixth centuries A.D., and the folk movements in Europe contemporary with this.
