A Phonological Analysis of a Dialect Recording of Withypool (Somerset)

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Withypool, Somerset, based on the collector's analysis of a tape recording of one male speaker, made by Stanley Ellis in 1956. An introduction to the village and the research methodology employed is followed by chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1956, and the development of Middle English sounds in the Withypool dialect. An Appendix contains phonetic and othographic transcriptions of Ellis' tape recording, in which the informant gives an account of flooding in Withypool in 1952. The collector refers to this as a description of the Lynmouth floods, and while the informant mentions the flooding in that town, the bulk of the account describes the effects of floodwater on Withypool and its environs.
