The Phonology of the Dialect of Spitalfields in the London Borough of Stepney
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in the Spitalfields area of the London borough of Stepney, based on data collected from three local informants, interviewed over Easter 1961. An introduction to the area, including a brief history of Spitalfields Market, and the collector's informants, is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the Spitalfields dialect recorded in 1961, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1961, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Spitalfields dialect. A Word List is included. Photographs taken by the collector show one of the entrances to Spitalfields Market, street scenes and the collector's principal informant.
