A Historical Survey of the Modern Dialect of Catforth

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in the village of Catforth in Lancashire, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with three local informants during April 1974. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by three chapters which record the vowels and consonants of Catforth, the development of the sounds of Middle English in the modern dialect (stressed vowels), and present a tabular summary of the Old English, Middle English, Old French, Anglo-Norman and Old Norse equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Catforth dialect. An Index of Words is also included.
