A Phonological Survey of the Dialects of Durham
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in five localities in the county of Durham, based on fieldwork undertaken by Stanley Ellis in 1953, for the Survey of English Dialects. An Introduction contains descriptions of the research methodology and the five localities under investigation. Two chapters describe the development of Middle English sounds in the Durham dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1953. The first appendix contains 32 printed maps, showing general phonological differences in the dialects. The second appendix (in two additional files) contains words recorded by Ellis in 1953, re-recorded on printed sheets by the collector in Dieth-Orton Questionnaire Book order. The answer to each question, for each locality, is transcribed phonetically. The etymology and Middle English equivalents are also recorded. The files contain sheets for Books I-V and VI-IX.
