A Synchronic Study of the Dialect of Thorney, Cambridgeshire
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in Thorney in Cambridgeshire, based on data collected from interviews with three local informants, conducted during the Easter and summer of 1968. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by two chapters which record the sounds of the dialect (vowels and consonants), and the vowel phonemes of the dialect (short vowel, mixed vowel, diphthong, consonant). Appendices discuss nasalisation and the influence of Received Pronunciation. A note on length is also included. Although reference is made in the study to the tape recording of informants, no tapes were submitted with the dissertation.
