The Living Dialect of Cardington, Shropshire

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Cardington in Shropshire. An introduction to the village and the collector's three principal informants is followed by chapters which give a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1953, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1953, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the living dialect. An Appendix contains two passages, transcribed phonetically and orthographically, from gramophone disc recordings made in Cardington by Harold Orton. Photographs of the village and environs, and a Word List, are included. A photograph of one of the collector's principal informants is missing from the thesis.
