An Account of the Phonology of the Dialect of Repton, Derbyshire

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in the Derbyshire village of Repton , based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with four local informants. An introduction to the village (including postcard print views) and three of the informants is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds used in the dialect recorded in 19[76], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1977, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English and Scandinavian equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Repton dialect. An Index of Words includes all the words used for illustrative purposes within the study. An Ordnance Survey map (Melbourne Derbyshire Sheet SK 32) is included.
