Description

A study of Mothering Sunday, with particular reference to its observance in Nottinghamshire. Chapter One covers the origins, growth, partial extinction and revival of the custom, with reference to Constance Penswick-Smith[pseudonym: real name Constance Adelaide Smith], the Mothering Sunday movement and its aims and methods. The revival of the custom in churches in Coddington and Nottingham is described. Further sections consider Mother's Day in the United States. Chapter Two describes customs and traditions associated with Mothering Sunday (church, Sunday School, visiting and giving of gifts, food - Simnel cake, Ladoma Simnel, Mothering Sunday cake, Wafer cakes, Furmety, Carling Sunday, Refreshment Sunday - flowers, cards, at home, Clipping the church, hymns and orders of service). Chapter Three describes Mothering Sunday in the parish of St. Jude's, Mapperley, Nottingham. Specimen church services, hymn sheets and greetings cards are included. Photographs show a Mothering Sunday cake and church clipping ceremony.
