The Dialect of Kirkby and Great Broughton - North Yorkshire: A Descriptive and Historical Survey
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in the North Yorkshire villages of Kirkby and Great Broughton, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with four informants. An introduction to the villages and the informants is followed by five chapters. The first records the vowels and diphthongs of the dialect, describes the vowels in stressed syllables and presents a table of consonants. The second chapter records the development of Middle English phonemes into the modern dialect, whilst the third records the development of Middle English vowels of unstressed syllables into the dialect. The fourth chapter records consonantal sound changes from the Middle English period down to 1980, and the final chapter presents a tabular summary of the origins of the stressed vowels in the modern Kirkby and Great Broughton dialects. A Word List is also included.
