The Phonology of the Dialect of Hemyock in East Devon
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in Hemyock in Devon, based on data collected in August 1958 from five informants answering questions from the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire. An introduction to the village and the area, and the informants, is followed by five chapters which present the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1958, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1958, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the living dialect. The first of two appendices presents information on the hearth fire and the cooking done over it, and the second contains completed Dieth-Orton Questionnaire Response Book leaves, with answers recorded phonetically for Books I-IX. Biographical notes on the informants, and information on the forms of the verb to be, are also included. A Word List is included between the two appendices. Photographs of one of the informants, the village and its environs, are included in the Introduction.
