Bewdley Brass Foundry: A Description of its History and the Techniques Used There

Description

A dissertation comprising five chapters. The first presents a history of H. J. Exley Limited, Bewdley brass founders, followed by a description of the foundry building (including a map and side and plan elevation drawings). The third chapter describes techniques and methods of working at the foundry, the fourth the conditions of work, attitudes of owners and the workmen. The final chapter considers the market for the products of the foundry. Drawings and photographs illustrate equipment, tools and production methods. A glossary of terms is included, and appendices contain an abstract of trade directories, Account Book, information on the Bancks family, copies of correspondence, accident book entries and wage sheets. Transcripts of an interview with a foundryman, made by the collector in 1979, and of an undated tape recorded interview loaned to the collector by the Curator of Bewdley Museum, are also included (both ms. photocopies).
