The Folklore of Plants: An Analysis of its Function with Reference to Patterns of Expression

Description

A dissertation which examines sixteen informants' beliefs relating to plants, and how they express such beliefs, based on interviews and correspondence with readers of gardening journals. The study takes a functional approach to the information gathered in this way, and is concerned with the result expected by the belief; the outcome anticipated by the lore. It also takes account of the manner of expression, that is the verbal structure by which the belief is articulated. The analysis of the function of a belief via the structure of its expression demonstrates the multiplicity of ways in which the same function can be articulated.
