The Art and Craft of Glass-Blowing by Hand
Description
A dissertation based on the observation of methods and terms used in the making of antique glass in Sunderland (at Hartley, Wood and Company), and in the making of vases, wine glasses and ornaments in London (at Whitefriars Glass Limited). The collector interviewed employees from these two firms, as well as independent glass workers based in Bristol and Whitby. Five chapters present the historical background to the industry, the composition, manufacture and colouring of glass, blowing and shaping the cylinder, the finishing processes of antique glass-making and glass-blowing, ancient and modern. A glossary of occupational words and names is included. Photographs and line drawings show the manufacturing process and implements used.
