The Living Dialects of Oxfordshire
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in Oxfordshire, based on fieldwork undertaken by Stanley Ellis and Peter Wright in 1953, for the Survey of English Dialects. Six localities were investigated: Kingham, Steeple Aston, Islip, Eynsham, Cuxham and Binfield Heath. An introduction to the six localities is followed by chapters on the development of Middle English [ME] sounds in the dialects of the county (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), the development of the ME consonant system, and a tabular summary of Old English, ME, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Oxfordshire dialects. Two appendices comprise one file of 46 word maps, and three files of printed sheets recording individual keywords and phonetic transcriptions for the word from each of the six localities. These files are arranged by ME diphthongs, ME short vowels and ME long vowels.
