Farming Traditions in South Shropshire
Description
A thesis based on the experiences of the collector's family, farming an area near Clun in Shropshire. The study is in two parts. The first covers farming traditions, and includes sections on working traditions at the beginning of the nineteenth century, hay making, ploughing, seed time, harvest, sheep-farming, horses, cows, the farmer as veterinary surgeon and some Shropshire sayings. The second part covers domestic crafts, with sections on the use of garden and orchard produce, butter-making, pig-killing, poultry, domestic crafts and dialect words. Photographs show farming-related equipment, buildings, tools and implements used in butter making.
