The Abbots Bromley Horn Dance

Description

A study of the Horn Dance of Abbots Bromley in Staffordshire, performed traditionally once a year in September. The custom was witnessed by the collector in 1974 and 1975, and further fieldwork undertaken in December 1975. The study comprises five chapters. The first presents a description of the village of Abbots Bromley, past and present. The second chapter discusses the historical continuity of the dance, whilst the third chapter looks in detail at elements of the dance - the dance itself, accompanying music, costumes and properties, the horns, the route taken by the dancers, the collection, the date and the dancers. Chapter Four presents interpretations of the custom from scholars and villagers. The final chapter discusses the problem of continuity. Photographs taken in 1974 and 1975 by the collector, of the village and stages in the dance, are included within these chapters. Appendices provide the tune transcription of the dance, tunes previously in use, team members for 1974 and 1975, previous leaders and dates, photocopies of team photographs for 1910, 1915 and c.1920, a photocopied article from the 'Daily Telegraph' of 1892, a family tree showing the descendants of James Fowell, weights and measurements of the horns, and horn dance as performed in the United States of America.
