Innovation and Change in the Celebration of Christmas in the Ukrainian Community of Lower Hurst
Description
A study of a community of Ukrainian immigrants living in the Lower Hurst area of Greater Manchester, near Ashton-under-Lyne, with particular reference to customs and beliefs associated with their celebration of Christmas (according to the old or Julian calendar). Information was elicited through interviews with families in January 1976, based around a questionnaire compiled by the collector. The study comprises a brief history of the Ukraine, a description of the Ukrainian community in Lower Hurst, followed by descriptions of the Ukrainians' celebration and observation of St. Nicholas' Day (December 19th), December 25th, Christmas Eve (January 6th), the period January 7th-19th. An Appendix includes five recipes for savoury and sweet Ukrainian dishes. A sample questionnaire is also included.
