Changes in the Transmission of the Story of Pocahontas in England from 1625 to the Present Day
Description
A study comprising six chapters. The Introduction contains sections on the transmission of folktales, the story of Pocahontas, types of changes in the transmission of folktales and the format of the collector's analysis. Chapter Two presents an examination of allusions to the story in English literature, from the first in 1625 to the first mention in the twentieth century (1914). The third chapter looks at attempts to re-create the story of Pocahontas in written form, whilst Chapter Four concerns oral accounts of the story and includes transcriptions of the collector's tape-recorded interviews with the vicar of Heacham Church, and Stewart Sanderson of the University of Leeds' Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies. Chapter Five contains documentary evidence supporting the Pocahontas story, including photocopies of correspondence, Parish Register entries, photographs and maps. The final chapter offers concluding remarks.
