Walking Day: A Study of Church and Sunday School Processions in the North West

Description

A study of the traditions associated with the Walking Day custom observed in Lancashire, Cheshire and parts of Yorkshire. This generally takes the form of a procession of Sunday School children and church members, accompanied by the clergy and bands, with the purpose of proclaiming the faith of the walkers. The collector provides a description of the event she participated in as a child (in Lancashire), and also makes reference to events in Warrington and the nearby village of Winwick. The main focus of the study is the Whit Walks in Manchester, with sections on the development of the custom and the Sunday School Movement, growth and imitation after 1801, the development of the Whit Week holiday, success and opposition in the twentieth century, the decline in numbers, and the background to the Whit Walks. Photographs taken in 1974 of the Warrington Walking Day are included. These show a procession, church banner, Salvation Army band, a Sunday School banner and a Rose Queen.
