A Study of the Hat-Making Craft

Description

A study describing the history of, and contemporary manufacturing processes within, the hat-making industry. Particular reference is made to the Offerton branch of the Battersby Hat Company . Sixteen chapters cover the history of hats, raw materials, fur blending, fur preparation, forming, hardening, planking, settling, hat sizes, the carpenter's shop, hand-blocking, proofing and dyeing, open hand framing, tall hats, the finishing and trimming department, and the Battersby factory. Photographs showing the premises and various stages of the hat manufacturing process are included throughout.
