Description
A dissertation which gives an account of the work of blacksmiths and farriers, including some historical background but mainly concentrating on their methods and practices and the state of the two crafts in 1977. Fieldwork involved interviews with a blacksmith specialising in decorative ironwork, and living and working in Cross Hills (between Skipton and Keighley), a farrier working in Healaugh , and a visit to the Army School of Farriery (part of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps Training Centre) at Melton Mowbray.
The dissertation's six chapters cover the history of metalworking, the tools and equipment, methods and practices, of blacksmiths and farriers, descriptions of the collector's three informants and their workplaces, and information on the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths and the Worshipful Company of Farriers. A glossary of craft related terms is included. Line drawings and photographs of tools, equipment, scrolls, bends and horseshoes are also included. Further photographs show the making of a horseshoe, shoeing a horse and the interiors of the forge at Healaugh and the Army School.
