Birth, Marriage and Death: Beliefs and Customs

Description

A study of beliefs and customs associated with birth, marriage and death, based on printed sources, the collector's own inheritance of belief and custom, interviews and correspondence with informants. The survey is restricted to the North of England, and the majority of the informants were resident in Manchester, Nottinghamshire, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Lancashire, County Durham and Cheshire. The first section, Birth, presents information concerning pre-birth beliefs and divination of sex, the birth itself, cauls, euphemisms, after birth events, baptism, customs appertaining to young babies, the Rocking Ceremony and the churching of women. The section on marriage contains sections on engagement, dress, attendants, the Stag Party, the wedding ring, wedding day superstitions, marriage service, Jewish weddings, the Reception, wedding cake, the next bride, presents, honeymoon, anniversaries, Gretna Green, the Dowrie Brides, the DunmowFlitch ceremony and sayings connected with marriage. The final section presents customs and beliefs relating to death, and includes sections on omens, the death bell, euphemisms, telling the bees, the house of mourning, Lyke Wakes, bidding to the funeral, mourning, the funeral, churchyards and cemeteries, cremation, coffins, funeral feasts, Roman Catholic funerals, Orthodox Jewish funerals, children's funerals, military funerals, suicides and criminals, sea communities, visits to the grave, Virginal Crowns and gloves.
