A Comparison of the Living Dialects of Tettenhall and Bilston (Staffordshire)

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Tettenhall and Bilston in Staffordshire, based on interviews with fifteen informants, aged between eleven and seventy-five. An introduction to the two localities and the informants is followed by four chapters which describe for both areas the vowels and diphthongs, the complete data for the two dialects, the consonants and a comparison of the two dialects. An Appendix includes notes on grammar, and an Index lists all the words recorded by the collector for both dialects. Six of the Bilston informants were tape recorded engaging in free conversation with one another, rather than being interviewed by the collector. This tape was not submitted with the study.
