The Concept of the Outlaw
Description
A dissertation which traces the development of popular traditions concerning the outlaw in literature. The literature chosen is mainly from the Medieval English period. A short comparison with two late-nineteenth century outlaw heroes is included, to show the evolution of a body of outlaw traditions which, as it passed from one figure to another, consolidated into a form from which the stereotyped image of the outlaw as a hero emerged. The study's sections consider Hereward and the Icelandic Saga heroes, the thirteenth-century popular forest-outlaw traditions of Robin Hood, and Jesse James and Ned Kelly.
