Description
A dissertation on lacemaking, with particular reference to the industry in Nottingham. The first chapter presents a general history of lacemaking, whilst the second focusses on pillow lace, with sections on lace schools, the decline of lacemaking and the making of pillow lace. The third chapter concentrates on machine-made lace, with sections on such lace made in previous centuries and in the twentieth century. The final chapter discusses the uses of lace. Appendices present information on the Stocking Loom, a glossary of terms used in the lace industries, lace samples and a list of informants. Postcard prints and illustrations from books and magazines are included throughout.
