Some Aspects of Folk Life in Whitehaven

Description

A study of folk life in Whitehaven, based on information gathered from the collector's grandparents, visitors to their house and other family members, and covering roughly the seventy year period 1910 to 1980. An Introduction is followed by a chapter describing the town and community. Chapter Three concerns local Gypsy Traveller communities, whilst Chapter Four looks at family life and the home. Chapter Five focusses on health, and includes some home remedies known by the informants. The sixth chapter concerns recreation, and contains sections on storytelling and singing. Chapter Seven details religious beliefs and supernatural beliefs (ghosts, premonitions, divination). An Appendix contains transcripts of interviews with informants, made by the collector in late 1978 and 1979. These have been arranged by subject, and comprise stories about animals, a character known as Buttonsticks, family history, health, love and the supernatural. This study is a draft copy and comprises heavily corrected typescript, ms. leaves, notes on scraps of paper and index cards, and photocopied sheets. A final copy has not been traced. Reference is made to the tape recording of interviews, but no tapes have been found.
