Vernacular Architecture in the Parish of Richards Castle
Description
A dissertation which records a number of buildings that are to be found within the bounds of the parish of Richards Castle, which straddles the Herefordshire/ Shropshire border. The village of the same name is in Herefordshire. The study shows how the examples recorded are representative of the area, the products of a localised set of conditions and that to some extent they are classifiable. Its chapters provide a historical introduction to the village, details of local building materials, descriptions of the houses surveyed (including record sheets for each building, with accompanying photographs) and descriptions of timber-framed buildings (including the collector's pencil drawings) and stone houses in the parish. The fieldwork survey was carried out using the methods suggested by Ronald Brunskill in his 'Illustrated Handbook of Vernacular Architecture' (1970).
