Folk Medicine: A Bibliography
Description
A compilation of English-language book and journal article titles relating to folk medicine. A date range is not given. The collector states in the Introduction that the purpose of the bibliography is to show how the subject has progressed and developed over time, and to put into perspective the fieldwork and study which has been carried out. It also shows the types of folk medicine practised, and the general trends of scholarship at different periods of time. Sources are divided into three categories: direct primary, indirect primary and secondary. The distinction made between the first two of these categories lies in whether the writer actually believes or participates in the folk medicine practice he/she is recording. The indirect primary sources are written by those who have collected material from another source and who present it as a new finding. The secondary sources are mostly written by scholars of folklore who have read the reports of fieldworker or herbalist and who conduct a critical commentary upon that work overall. The Introduction includes a brief review of some of the works which have contributed to such scholarship. Entries within each of the three sections are arranged alphabetically by author.
