The Living Dialect of Walsden, Lancashire

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Walsden, West Yorkshire (in Lancashire when the study was undertaken), based on data collected from three local informants during 1968 and early 1969. An introduction to the village and its environs is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1968-1969, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1969, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Walsden dialect. An Appendix contains phonetic and orthographic transcriptions of part of an interview with one of the collector's informants, in which she recounts her childhood experience of New Year mumming with friends from [Walsden] Sunday School. A Word List is also included.
