The Living Dialect of Farnley in the West Riding of Yorkshire

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Farnley, in the old West Riding of Yorkshire, based on data collected from three male informants in 1963. An introduction to the area and the informants is followed by chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the Farnley dialect (vowels of stressed syllables and consonants) recorded in 1963, and the development of Middle English sounds in the Farnley dialect (vowels of stressed syllables). An Appendix contains orthographic and phonetic transcriptions of an extract from a tape-recorded interview with one of the informants, Benjamin Harrison, made for the collector by Stanley Ellis in October 1963. A Word List, and photographs of two of the informants and the area in which they live, are also included.
