The Observance of Mothering Sunday

Description

A thesis on the tradition and observance of the mothering custom, based on fieldwork carried out in North Nottinghamshire villages from February to October 1965, and early in 1966. Information was also gathered through correspondence with local people, and a questionnaire. Primary source material, and a Swedish study of the subject, were also consulted. A representative sample of ten completed questionnaires is included as an appendix. The study comprises four main chapters, describing in turn the tradition of Mothering Sunday, Constance Penswick-Smith [pseudonym: real name Constance Adelaide Smith], the Mothering Sunday movement and the revival of the custom, the observance of Mothering Sunday and the mothering custom as observed in Sweden and the United States.
