Description
A study of the local shrimping industry to the north and south of Southport, based on fieldwork carried out during the months of April, August and September 1965. The study's sections present an introductory note on the shrimp, a brief history of the Southport area with particular reference to the fishing and shrimping industries, a description of the shrimper's working day and the catching and processing of shrimps, a report of a trip made by the collector in a shrimp boat on 30th September 1965, nets and net-making, shrimp baskets and basket-making, local traditions (Spring festival, community singing, customs and beliefs), shrimping in other areas ( Flookburgh, Harwich, the Thames Estuary and Oostduinkerke in Belgium). A final section offers thoughts on future prospects for the industry. A glossary of technical terms is included, and photographs and diagrams illustrating all aspects of the shrimping industry are included throughout.
