A study of the dialect spoken in the Derbyshire town of Ilkeston, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with four principal informants, and conversations with others in local pubs. An introduction to the town and the informants in Chapter One (including photographs showing views of Ilkeston and its environs) is followed by five further chapters which present a descriptive account of the vowel and consonant sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[79], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe the development of Middle English consonantal sounds in the modern dialect, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Scandinavian, Old French and Middle English equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Ilkeston dialect. A Word List is also included.
