Devils, Saints and Heroes: A Collection of Stories, Customs and Beliefs from Bute, Arran and the Cumbraes

Description

A collection of some of the customs, beliefs and narratives from four Scottish islands, Great Cumbrae, Little Cumbrae , Arran and Bute, gathered from printed sources and interviews with selected inhabitants of each island. The study comprises an Introduction to the four islands, followed by three chapters. The first, Superstitious Belief and Practice, contains parts concerning rocks and stones, wells and water, caves and cairns, goblins, fairies and witches, magic, divination and supra-natural influence. The second section concerns traditional customs, and contains parts relating to childbirth and christening, marriage, death and burial. The final section contains traditional narratives associated with place, and legends about people. Two appendices contain information on the Reverend James Adam of Cumbrae, and a list of placename and their meanings.
