Description

A study of the dialect spoken in the town of Wombwell, South Yorkshire, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with one informant. An introduction to the town and the informant is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[82], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1983, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, French and Scandinavian equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Wombwell dialect. A Word Index is included.
