Tradition and Belief in Industrial Communities: A Comparative Study of Middlesbrough and Some Durham Mining Villages

Description

An examination and comparison of the folklore of people living in Middlesbrough and Durham, based on fieldwork interviews in the homes and workplace of steelworkers (including a visit in 1964 to the works of the South Durham Iron and Steel Company), and correspondence with Durham miners, following a request for information in the 'Northern Echo'. Fieldwork was carried out over the period July - September 1964, and December - January 1964-1965. The study is divided into two sections. The first provides a background to the working man's life, and a general introduction to aspects of home life including housing communities, leisure time amusements and general beliefs. The second and main section concerns the man at work, with sections on occupational beliefs, tricks on apprentices and new workers, food and drink and charity. A glossary of words and terms, newspaper cuttings and copies of correspondence are included.
