Children's Games and Rhymes

Description

A collection of children's games and rhymes collected from boys and girls of the second form of Ossett Grammar School in West Yorkshire. The contributors were then resident in Ossett, Wakefield and Horbury. The collected items are divided into six sections - ring games, street games, ball games, skipping rhymes, taunts and songs and rhymes - and includes children's descriptions of the games, (explanatory) notes from the collector, textual and some tune transcriptions. The collector draws attention to those examples in the collection not appearing in the Opies' 'The Lore and Language of Schoolchildren' (Clarendon Press: Oxford, 1961).
