A Phonology of the Dialect of Rainow in the County Palatine of Chester
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in Rainow, Cheshire, based on the written fieldwork recordings made by Peter Wright in 1951, for the Survey of English Dialects. An introduction to the village and the area is followed by five chapters which give a descriptive account of the sounds of the Rainow dialect recorded in 1951, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the dialect (vowels of accented and unaccented syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1951, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the dialect. Appendices provide notes on the Definite Article and the verb to be. A Word List is also included.
