A Descriptive and Historical Survey of the Dialect of Lealholm

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in the North Yorkshire village of Lealholm, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with three local informants, conducted in April 1977. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by four chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1977, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and present a tabular summary of Old English, Scandinavian, Old French and other equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Lealholm dialect. A Word Index is included.
