The Phonology of the Dialect of Withnell Fold: A Descriptive and Historical Survey
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in the Lancashire village of Withnell Fold, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with one female informant. An introduction to the village (including photographs) is followed by four chapters which record the phonology of the Withnell Fold dialect, the development of Middle English sounds in the dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and present a tabular summary of the Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Withnell Fold dialect. An Index lists all the words used as examples in the study.
