A Thesis on Children's Games Observed and Recorded in the London Area

Description

A collection of children's games, songs and rhymes collected in the London area. Classification is according to type, and the items recorded are presented in fourteen sections. Each section is preceded by information on where the game is played, and the age and sex of the children who play it. Any accompanying rhymes are included, and information on origins is stated following a description of the game (the actions involved). Photographic illustrations and pencil drawings are included throughout. The sections are: dips; skipping games (with and without bumps); ball games; He; hide and seek; games with no implements, natural implements and man-made implements; party games; occasional games; miscellaneous rhymes; jokes, rhymes and tongue twisters; game vocabulary. Twelve tune transcriptions are included. A final section considers the origins of some of the games cited.
